NORTH EAST GRADUATE CONGRESS (NEGC) 2017






 Introduction:

The 4th North East Graduate Congress was organized by University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya ( USTM) in association with Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST) on the 17th, 18th & 19th  February, 2017 at the USTM Campus. A total of around 5000+ students from all over the North East of India participated in the Congress.
The Congress was organized with the aim to empower Undergraduates and Graduates in respect of social, economic, intellectual and physical development and enhance their skills & bring out capabilities of the future graduates through various life skill sessions and competitions thereby enabling them to take up challenges and cultivate leadership qualities in activities which were intended to ensure growth and development.
The sessions were guided and presided over by renowned leaders/achievers, counselors, HR managers, Govt. Officials and various experts from different domains across the country.


Inaugural Session:
The NEGC-2017 was inaugurated by Shri  Mani Shankar Aiyar, Hon’ble Former Union Minister in presence of Dr. Mridul Hazarika, Hon'ble Vice-Chanchellor of Guahati University, Dr. Drubajyoti Saikia, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Cotton College State University, Shri Mukesh Sahay, IPS, Hon’ble Director General of Police, Assam; Prof NK Choudhury,  Hon’ble Former VC, GU & Principal Advisor, ERDF; Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Hon’ble Chancellor, USTM & Chairman, ERDF and Dr. P. G. Rao, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, USTM.

 The Following are the details of various technical sessions and competitions held during the Congress:

SESSION-I
Date-1702/17

Topic: YOUTH & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Speaker: MR. SOHAIL AHMED, Founder & Chief Mentor
Mentor My Way Inc. New Delhi

The esteemed speaker stressed on how the students and future graduates can opt entrepreneurship and small scale industries as their future career. They further added Northeast region is full of natural resources and to utilize those resources youth of the region should come forward. With the help of business loans and Government schemes, youth can generate employment opportunities for themselves and for others also.

SESSION II
Date-17/02/17

Topic:      COMPETITIVE EXAMINATIONS
Speaker:  Mr. SAILEN BAISHYA


Mr Sailen Baishya elaborated the scheme and techniques of one of the toughest exam the Indian Administrative Service. He also explained what are the different reasons why NE students failed to crack and suggested ways for the same. Mr. Sailen Baishya noted quiz master of Assam deliberated an hour long lecture on current affair and IT which is related to Civil Service Examination. Overall the event marked success and hope that students and other participants has learned a lot.


SESSION III

Topic:     ARE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES REALLY SOCIAL?

Speaker: Shri N I Laskar, Ex Editor Eastern Chronicle & renound Media personality
                Mr Siddhartha Pratim Dutta, Communicatio & Language Trainer
               
The first speaker of the session, Mr N I Laskar said that the question whether Social Networking Sites are social or not is totally irrelevant in today’s context. The number of users of social networking sites have crossed billions and almost as the number of people living in a continent. But we should know how to use it, so that it can help us and the society added Mr Laskar.

The second speaker of the session, Mr Siddhartha Pratim Dutta, said that the users of social networking sites should use proper language so that it should not portray a wrong image of our character and any other element we are citing in the sites.
Both the speakers used a lot of PPT slides to make their deliberation more understandable and interesting to the student participants.   



Technical Session –IV
Date: 18/02/17

Topic:      Personality Development & Soft Skills
Speaker: Mr. Thomas John Rose

This is the session which has witnessed the youth power of this nation as the speaker Mr Thomas has involved every participant in his speech through interaction.  Mr Thomas has asked the students to be the warrior of this nation and dream big and work hard for the betterment of this country. 
He said that youth are heroes and they should know it. They should not think less and should be confident and keep faith on their dreams. Mr Thomas took the promise from the participants to never give up of their hopes, desires and dreams.


Technical Session-V

Topic:      YOUTH, POLITICS & CORRUPTION

Speakers: The fifth session of NEGC- 2017 dealt in “Youth, Politics and Corruption,” was moderated by Mr. Mrinal Talukdar, the eminent Journalist and TV personality.  The other esteemed speakers of the occasion were,

The politicians of various parties encouraged the youth to come forward and take politics as a viable career. They have further mentioned that the youngsters are the architect of the future generation and they can build a clean society if they come forward to join politics and maintain honesty.


EVENTS/COMPETITIONS

In this 4th North East Graduate Congress, we have introduced few sports events. These were,
Volleyball, Basketball, Carom and Badminton.
Among the other competitions, there were, Group Song, Group Dance, Skit Competition, Debate, Quiz Competition, Photography Competition, Write Up Competition, Cartooning Competition and Mimicry Competition.

 Best Graduate Competition: One of the most attractive competitions of the NEGC is the Best Graduate Competition. Prof S K Borthakur, from  the Department of Botany, Gauhati University and  Shri P J Baruah were the judges of this competitions. The winners were selected on the basis of their extraordinary academic career, written and communication skills, awards and achievements.

Group Dance: The Group Dance Competition in NEGC-2017 organized by University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya was held in the university campus on 17th February’17 at the Main Pandal. The groups were given 6 minutes time for performance. Noted danseuse Dr. Mallika Kandali graced the event as the Judge and she was accompanied by internal judge Ms. Pratiti Barman, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Social Work, USTM. There were three winner prizes given to three groups which were 1st prize to Raha College, 2nd prize to Modern College, Imphal and 3rd prize to Koklabari College. The overall event was a great success and done in a disciplined manner.

Photography Competition: A Photography Competition was held during on the 2nd day of NEGC 2017. The mobile photography competition was judged by Shri  Vikramajit Kakati.   
Sarfaraj Islam, a student of USTM won the 1st Prize, Nupur Gogoi, from USTM won the 2nd Prize and Manas Pratim Nath, from Pub-Kamrup College won the 3rd Prize. The Jury’s Choice award went to Suwahil Mustafa, Sonapur College (Best Composition) and Bijir Lal Narzary, Barama College (Best Campus Life).
Quiz Competition: A quiz competition ws also held during the NEGC 2017. The quiz master was Shri Sailen Baishya, a renound quiz master of North East. A large number of students have participated in the event. The winners of the competition are:

Cartooning Competition: Cartooning competition of NEGC 2017 was held on 18th February’2017 (from 8.20 AM) at Room D 201 of Block C in USTM campus. Participants’ list was collected by student volunteers and the coordinator from NEGC registration desk on the previous day, i.e., 17th February. There was announcement at regular intervals regarding venue and time of the competition. Nituparna Rajbongshi, a well-known cartoonist from Guwahati, was invited to judge the competition.

Sports Competition

Volleyball: The 4th North East Graduate Congress (NEGC-2017), witnesses the inclusion of sporting events for the first time. For the maintenance of game standard and ethical conduct among the competing teams, the Volleyball matches at NEGC-2017, was officiated by the six referees. Five referees were invited from Assam Volleyball Association and one from Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education, Guwahati (AIPE). Volleyball segments at NEGC-2017 shows the participation from 19 colleges, institutes and universities including RIST and USTM. All the teams competed rigorously for the coveted trophy on 18th February, 2017. The final match was played between AIPE and Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya, Guwahati. The coveted trophy of the champion was finally lifted by AIPE.

Carom Competition: This is the carom event in NEGC which is categories only Doubles open among the colleges. 30 boys’ team and 3 girl’s team are participated during the NEGC in carom tournament from different part of the North East.

Badminton: Badminton Competition was also organized for the first time at the 4th  NEGC-17. The games were played in “Doubles” format for both Boys and Girls categories. The game was organized for 2 days ie. On 17th and 18th February, 2017. On that occasion 28 Boys team and 8 Girls team from different colleges took part in the event. Games were played with “Yonex-mavis 350 yellow nylon shuttle”. 4 referees were invited from “Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education”. Champions and Runner’s Up are as follows-

National Workshop for Teachers:
Date: 18/02/17
A workshop was also organized during the Congress for the teacher coordinators from different colleges of North East at the NEGC 2017. The topic of the workshop was “Teachers as Motivators & Counselors”. The seminar was started with welcome speech by Dr P G Rao, Honorable Vice Chancellor, USTM. Chief Guest of the seminar was Prof  B K Konwar , former Vice- Chancellor, Nagaland University and Professor Deptt. of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tezpur  University. The other esteemed guests of the Seminar were Prof. Daisy Bora Talukdar, KK Handique State Open University who delivered the key note address and she enriched the participants regarding the role of teachers as reformer and explained how to motivate and counsel the students. Prof Gayetree Goswami, Department of Education, Gauhati University, delivered a speech on “Motivation and counseling vis-à-vis teaching and learning process”. On her inspiring speech, participants are immensely benefitted. Another speaker Dr Brinda Bazeley Kharbirymbai, Department of Education, NEHU delivered a speech on ‘Quality Assurance in Indian Higher Education’and elaborately explained about the assessment process of NAAC. Mr Mazin Muktar (of USA) a renowned educationist provided valuable insights into ‘How we can train enough teachers to provide quality education for all’. Also Mr Deepankar Bhattacharjya, Consultant, Mind India delivered an influential and motivational speech on “Motivation in Teaching”. A panel discussion on “Higher Education at Cross Roads” was followed by the speeches of the invited guest. The seminar was successfully conducted by Dr Parbin Sultana, Associate Professor, Department of Business Administration with the help of Fariza Saidin, Assistant Professor, Department of Education and Barasha Bhuyan, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce & Economics. with the guidance of Professor Nilima Bhagawati, Dean, School of Education, Social Science and Humanities, USTM the seminar was  a grand success.

In the workshop, there were 67 teacher participants from different parts of North-East Region of India, who took keen interest in the same. The participants expressed their high satisfaction on the deliberation of the workshop.    


Valedictory Function:
Date: 19/02/17
The Valedictory function of NEGC 2017 started with the Farewell song followed by the expression of gratitude by the authorities of the university along with the organizing team of NEGC 2017.

The Chancellor of USTM and chairman of ERD Foundation, Mr. M. Hoque have expressed his satisfaction on successful completion of NEGc-2017 & offered thanks to everyone who contributed in making NEGC 2017 a grand success specially the sponsors. He assured all the participants that every year NEGC will be organized with more preparation to make it meaningful platform the young aspiring graduates. He expressed gratefulness to Dr PG Rao & his team who were instrumental in making the event effective.
